Show and Tell: No more lip dance with the BURNOUT Travel Mug

Welcome back to Show and Tell, where I unbox sweet tech for every area of your life. In this episode, let’s take a look at the BURNOUT temperature-regulating travel mug. Coffee is best served hot or iced, never in-between. So many of us resort to basic travel mugs to keep our drinks hot. But when you think about it, these mugs aren’t the best solution. They keep the coffee too hot, so you have to take the lid off. Then, the coffee gets too cool, and most travel mugs aren’t microwaveable. So, how can you keep your morning fuel at the right temperature? It’s not rocket science. Or is it?

Literally rocket science

This travel mug was designed by real rocket scientists who were tired of burning their mouths every morning which they call the ‘lip dance’. They used NASA technology called a heat zorb. It sounds like something from Mars, but really it’s a wax-like, bio-based substance that draws heat from the coffee and stores it to feed it back to maintain optimal drinking temperature:140 degrees Fahrenheit. This is phase change material that changes from a waxy substance to a liquid as it absorbs the heat. Just pour your coffee, wait three minutes, and take your first sip. BURNOUT’s mug will release the heat throughout the day, keeping your favorite drink hot but not too hot. The rest of the travel mug is fairly standard … It’s only an aerospace-grade vacuum chamber. 

Safe and ethical materials

While the heat zorb technology sounds foreign, it’s completely safe: non-petroleum, non-toxic, biodegradable and 100% renewable. And the lid is BPA-free. Just throw it in the dishwasher to clean, and you’re good to use it every morning — but the lid is suggested to be hand washed. You may not be going to work at NASA every day, but you can bring aerospace technology wherever you go.
